Stapelia grandiflora, Apocynaceae
I must have been talking a lot, without realising, about these South African plants, because when my boyfriend spotted them at Glasgow Botanic Gardens he surprised me with a: “these are those succulents that make big flowers that smell bad!” and I was so impressed with his memory! I smelled the flowers -which do smell like carrion as an adaptation to attract specific pollinators- and agreed, then invited him to do the same. He was overly shocked by how strong the death smell was and I found it hilarious. What a delicate floral scent!
